I blame being a female for being so prone to forming my sense of self via external influences. That's what makes us ladies more empathetic and lovely when our best friend has just been dumped. It's what makes us look at a picture of Elle MacPherson and want to cry. It's what makes us feel that the purchase of an expensive leather biker jacket is a compulsory step towards self-expression.
Ahem.
Boy or girl, there is something very appealing about getting a better handle on who you are, even if it is all tosh. When you're at a slightly vague point in your life and trying lots of things, it's almost comforting to have somebody put you in a little box and tell you what you're like. It focuses the mind. Why is it so difficult to tell what we are like all by ourselves? Do you know what you're like? It's so hard to tell from inside our own brains.
That's why the first time I did the Myers-Briggs Indicator (a similar one here) I LOVED it. The Myers-Briggs test is a Jung-devised personality profiling test, which divides into 16 distinct personality types. It just seemed to get me down to a tee (I'm an INFP: an introverted people person who...er...seeks above all to understand themselves and others). It's genuinely predictive and useful - I first did the test before I changed career, and I can see now I work with the general public how all the stuff about caring, listening and working with other people -which I would have scoffed at 10 years ago- are the areas I've flourished in and really enjoy.
Sam had to do one for work once too, and he is an ENFP, which basically means he is totally bonkers and lovely. And doesn't like washing up. Yet again, no surprises there.
I don't know why this makes me feel better, but it does.
Have you ever done a personality profiling test? Did they get you right?
When Rebecca was thinking about posting on star signs, she emailed me saying what did I think of it, and I wrote back like 6 emails saying 'yes yes...I know someone who is SUCH a Libran, blah blah blah...' so of course I just HAD to go and do the Myers Briggsque test you posted above - turns out I am an ENFP like Sam. I also am not hugely fond of washing up (or mopping the floor) and am VERY prone to losing things, although I can honestly say I don't have, or want a tattoo. And I wouldn't say I'm particularly irresponsible. Argh here you go - I'm doing exactly what you're talking about, taking your post about people relating personality types to themselves and ranting as I relate it to myself.
ReplyDeleteTattoo could relate to sartorial self-expression in general though (she says, finding tenuous link) and we can't say you aren't bothered about that, Ms Fashion! Might also go some way to explaining Sam's obsession with Hello Kitty branded clothing - ENFPs need to make themselves look different to everyone else....

We did one of those tests as part of our marriage prep, Gav and I were complete opposites (which we knew before we took the test). I can't for the life of me remember what I came out as then but I've just done it again and got INJF. Basically I'm a complicated, stubborn, emotional roller-coaster of a person whose never happy with themselves but will make a good mum.
ReplyDeleteGood to know!
They got one thing wrong though, I'm not patient. Oh no, not in the slightest bit. I'm like a kid on Christmas eve!
That's a really sweet idea for marriage prep - at the very least it prepares your other half for the rubbish bits and reminds them of why you're ace too!

I'm a ENFP... basically I should be famous. Which I agree with.
ReplyDeleteMe too!

Hello, am un-blurking for the first time... This is really timely - I just came back from a course where they did the red/green/blue/yellow personality test - again based on Jung. I really enjoyed the opportunity to read a nice long booklet about myself (!!) and I do think it came out with some genuinely useful stuff (I was yellow/green if anyone else has done that one - so chatty and people orientated, not very good at finishing tasks - ahem). Am now considering doing a Myers-Briggs too...
ReplyDeleteYessss I love a good de-blurk! *waves frantically* Hi Katy! I'm going to find a free online rip-off off your colours test now, yet another stepping stone on my typical INFP quest for self-knowledge/navel gazing....Fab!

Haha! I couldn't find a good online freebie one earlier (was evangelising to some friends on email about it) but just done Myers Briggs and was ESFJ - sounds pretty similar to the result I got on the other one so at least haven't changed personality dramatically in the last 2 days!
DeleteI'm an INTJ. I find this stuff fascinating.
ReplyDeleteOne day maybe I'll fulfill my role!
INFJ here! I thought I was a bag of contradictions - I think this reading backs that judgement up. Author! Strong drive and enjoys helping others. Ooo.
ReplyDeleteesfj is what I am!
ReplyDeleteinteresting - it says i like getting massages! and i definitely do not like science fiction. correct! haha
i'll have to get jack to do the test!
thanks penny
See, this is my problem with personality tests. The first question is "I favour the surreal" - Very Inaccurate, Very Accurate, or somewhere in between. I have NO IDEA how to answer this question. I want to do the test to know myself better, but I don't know myself well enough to do the test!
ReplyDeleteIt's a conundrum...
